Growsafe Standard Certificate
Who should do this course?
This course is for agrichemical users working independently (ie with little or no supervision) with responsibility for a single site/property and may have responsibility for managing or supervising others. You are likely to be operating in a known set of circumstances (for example, one location, crop and/or equipment type), or operating under the supervision of someone with Growsafe Advanced or RCA certification. You will be making decisions at your workplace on which agrichemicals to use, appropriate spray concentration, equipment setup, whether notification is required and be responsible for completing spray diaries. You must have experience in the use of agrichemicals.
The EPA Hazardous Substances (Hazardous Property Controls) Notice 2017 lists the Growsafe Standard certificate as an acceptable qualification for the use of highly ecotoxic agrichemicals for ground-based application. Additionally, all regional plans specify that agrichemicals used in commercial operations such as farms, orchards, vineyards, forests, must be applied in accordance with NZS8409. Most of these plans specify that users hold a Growsafe Standard certificate or equivalent training.

What about my team?
The Growsafe Standard course is designed for people making decisions about spray application, whereas the Growsafe Basic is for operators working under supervision. At the end of the Standard course, we expect an individual to be capable of managing a small-scale spray operation themselves, or at least know where to start to do so.
As a starting point for deciding on an appropriate course for your team member, ask yourself whether they:
- Assist with the annual spray planning or spray application planning?
- Take responsibility for signage and notification of neighbours?
- Decide on the sprayer set-up for the planned spray job?
- Undertake the measuring and mixing of agrichemicals?
- Complete the spray diaries?
- Manage the agrichemical store?
If you answered ‘no’ to all or most of these questions, it’s likely that Growsafe Standard is not the certificate for them. The Basic course will give them exposure to all of these topics but won’t require them to demonstrate they are capable of managing all of them. If you have a staff member, who has some of these responsibilities, then the Standard course might be a good way to develop their skills, and of course there should be at least one person at each workplace who holds a Growsafe Standard certificate.
